The Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC) S.5 Fleet Maintenance Management Study Group conducted an online survey of approximately 500 TMC Fleet Executive level members and 100 Service Provider Corporate level members in the second quarter of 2025. Of these, 16 company representatives responded.
Most respondents were from Motor Carriers or Service Providers. About 44 percent were motor carrier representatives; 12.5 percent were service provider representatives. About 12.5 percent reported operations at a national level.
Fleet size and type ranged considerably across respondents. Number of technicians employed ranged considerably from a low of “1” to a high of “249.” About 67 percent of respondents reported operating between 1-5 maintenance shops. About 27 percent reported operating between 6-20 maintenance shops
About 22 percent of respondents said at more than half of their technicians have attended a diesel training program. Nearly 43 percent said 25 percent or fewer of their technicians have attended a diesel training program. About 42 percent said a quarter or less of their technicians have attained ASE certification. About 20 percent said more than 75 percent of their technicians hold ASE certification. About 73 percent of companies said they did not pay technicians additional salary or other forms of compensation for attaining/maintaining ASE certifications.
Hourly rates for entry-level technicians ranged from $20 to $33, averaging $24.07 per hour. Eighty percent of companies said average annual pay for top technicians including overtime, bonuses and incentives ranged from $75,000 to $100,000.
Sixty percent of companies said they pay differently for night shift employees. All companies surveyed report paying employees using an hourly rate system, with 13.3 percent offering bonuses and 6.67 percent offering incentive programs and profit sharing respectively.
About 21.4 percent of technicians can earn the top pay level in less than five years. Nearly all companies reported offering a comprehensive package of benefits.
