ISO Expands Vehicle Safety Standard to Include Automated Heavy Duty Vehicles

The International Standards Organization (ISO) ihas published a new edition of ISO 26262 [Road Vehicles – Functional Safety]. This edition adds HD vehicles in its scope in the ISO Satnadard Catalogue section 22. The bew edition did not contain a retroactive clause, so vehicle designs released prior to December, 2018 or currently under development shou;ld nopt be required to change, as there no expectation of a retroactive approach.

ISO 26262 provides a standard of care for advanced driver assistance systems (and fully automated vehicles). It will be further enhanced with a standard to address SOTIF, Safety Of The Intended Functionality. SOTIF recognizes that faithful implementations of fundamentally flawed systems may not improve safety and seeks to assess general concepts ahead of the detailed design activities.
